  • Genetics and Food: From Molecule to Medicine

Have you ever wondered how biomolecules or chemical compounds contained in food affect our genes? Why each of us perceives the taste of foods differentely or how certain nutrients influence human health on a molecular level? This course explores the fascinating correlation between food, the human genome and the potential application of food science in medicine, in an interdisciplinary manner.

Students are introduced to fundamental concepts of food biochemistry and investigate the influence of nutrition in gene expression. Through the study of basic biological and pharmacological principles, they examine the crucial role of food science and technology in combating inflammations and serious diseases. Gene regulation, nutrigenomics and the study of novel edible materials with application in medicine are some of the key concepts of the exciting world which bridges food and medicine! Students also gain hands-on experience with laboratory techniques, involving gel electrophoresis, synthesis of polymeric materials for personalized medicine, and various biochemical assays (e.g. DNA extraction).

    Learning Objectives:
    • Study of the structure of nutrients and their impact on human body function.
    • Investigate the bioactivity of nutrients and its application in treatment of various diseases.
    • Practice laboratory techniques used in biosciences and food industry.
    • Develop and communicate cutting-edge projects through poster and oral presentations.

    Introduction to Biomedical Sciences

Which organ has over 400 functions? Are there liquid tissues in the human body? What factors contribute to the development of cancer? Much like Leonardo da Vinci’s fascination with human anatomy, our course delves into these intriguing questions! Drawing upon fundamental biological and chemical concepts, students explore the intricate anatomical and physiological mechanisms that govern normal human function, as an introduction to human biology and the science of medicine. Students learn about the human body’s different systems, including the digestive, cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, excretory, nervous, endocrine, and immune systems, highlighting their interconnectedness. Laboratory activities encompass histology, anatomy and physiology (including dissections) and biochemistry techniques. Students also learn practical skills, such as suturing, and dive into group work, solving epidemiology mysteries and investigating the causes and cures for different diseases.

    Learning Objectives

    • Model the interrelatedness of three human body systems working together to maintain homeostasis.
    • Demonstrate the skills and tools to complete scientific dissections.
    • Select, review and report on a disease or syndrome that impacts one human body system, including its causes, manifestation, symptoms and treatment methods.

    Our Beautiful Mind

Can cats actually see in the dark? Do snakes really smell with their tongues? What sense is associated most with memory? How do optical illusions “trick” the brain?

During this course, students discover the 5 senses and explore the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and the sensory organs. They’ll learn about sensory abilities that humans don’t have, like magnetoreception and sonar navigation, and discuss how the brain’s perception mechanisms turn sensory information into an organism’s experience of its surroundings.

By employing the scientific method, students work together to answer fascinating questions related to sensation, perception, and the brain.

    Learning objectives:

    • Learn how physical and chemical signals from the environment are translated into neural impulses in the body.
    • Understand the use of models in biology and how these are like and unlike what they represent, and create biological models for the key parts of the sensory systems of the body.
    • Comprehend the journey of information through the body from the sensation of an external stimulus all the way to the perception of it in the brain.
    • Use the scientific method to investigate questions related to the body’s use of the five senses and design an experiment from beginning to end.

    Principles of Engineering Design

What is the difference between science and engineering? What are the techniques that must be applied for successfully tackling any engineering challenge, from designing and building a bed-side table to conceptualizing and sending a shuttle to space? How can a group of engineers efficiently compartmentalize a multi-system project, allocate tasks and optimize the budget provided to solve a multifaceted constructional problem? This course explores a range of topics from physics and science and bridges the gap between pure theoretical knowledge and its practical application. Through daily doses of lectures, class discussions, problem-solving and plentiful hands-on lab activities, the students will be exposed to an array of concepts, varying from Newtonian dynamics and circuitry to fluid dynamics and thermal physics and through their application, complete engineering tasks of progressively increasing complexity.

    Learning objectives:

    • Apply concepts from various topics of physics into practical constructional projects with strict requirements, aimed at tackling specific problems of varying complexity and constraints.
    • Train in the engineering design process, practical problem-solving and collaborative teamwork to complete assigned engineering design and production tasks.
    • Develop and train a variety of technical skills, including detailed technical drawings of projects, precision soldering of electronic components and wood work skills.

Pythos: Where Code Bends the World

Pythos: Where Code Bends the World is an immersive course that invites students to master the fundamentals of Python programming within a fantastical universe. Inspired by the beloved saga “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” this unique experience transforms abstract coding concepts into tangible superpowers.

Students will embark on an epic quest through the four nations of Pythos, where the ability to code is akin to magic. By blending interactive storytelling with hands-on technical challenges, learners will not just study computer science—they will live it.

The Codebending Path (Learning Objectives): To save the world of Pythos, students must master the elements of Python:

Earth (Foundations): Build unbreakable code structures by mastering Variables and Data Types (integers, strings, lists), creating the bedrock upon which all programs stand.

Water (Flow): Learn the art of adaptability using Control Flow (if/else statements) and Loops (for/while), allowing programs to react fluidly to changing conditions.

Fire (Power): Harness the energy of Functions, creating reusable and powerful blocks of code to execute complex actions with precision and intensity.

Air (Abstraction): Unlock the freedom of Libraries and Modules, utilizing existing tools to expand creative possibilities and solve algorithmic problems with elegance.

Through this journey, students will evolve from novices to true Codebenders, developing critical Computational Thinking to debug errors and the Collaborative Spirit to solve real-world problems alongside their team.

    Superhero Academy

Save humanity, join the Superhero Academy!

Much like Superman and Batman, our Superhero Academy students are called upon to complete missions to help save humanity. In this interdisciplinary course, we will form a literary community and utilize disciplines such as technology, chemistry, psychology, literature, art, engineering, and sociology in the fight against crime, and in an effort to protect civilians against evil super-villains. Each mission will help us develop our vocabulary, creativity, critical thinking, and writing and presentation skills. Then, in order to graduate from CTY Greece’s Superhero Academy, we will create our own secret superhero identity, and engage in an original battle against threats of destruction. Superhuman powers, time traveling, tech novelties, architectural marvels, behaviors, motivations and code of ethics come alive, to form unique characters, extraordinary settings and epic stories!

Lessons and one-on-one conferences with the instructor will help students create their own mythological universe and help them grow as writers, inventors, storytellers and communicators. Cooperative learning and constructive criticism are key elements of the course, and detailed responses from your instructor and peers will play an essential role in the students’ growth.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Read, analyze, and discuss works of superhero fiction.
    • Practice writing personal narratives, instructional texts, descriptive articles and opinion pieces.
    • Utilize the tools introduced and skills learned in the course to compose four works of creative writing.
    • Engage in the writing workshop process, editing and revising work based on feedback from the instructor and your peers.
