  • More than Just a Game… Video Game Design in Unity (English)

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of video game design. Utilizing a project-based approach and the Unity Game Engine it aims to teach the basic theory and concepts of video game design from the perspective of a video game designer. At the same time, students learn the core skills of basic computer programing using the C# language as well as visual scripting.

Designing video games is not only about programming game mechanics but it is also about creating an entertaining experience for the player. This course introduces the concept and theory of “player centric” game design which includes topics like; the essential elements of a game, the structure of a video game, what the core mechanics of a game are and how they work with the user interface to create gameplay. Along with design elements, student learn the different roles of the design team members in the video game industry.

The programming language C# is introduced along with visual scripting using Playmaker. By the end of the course, students will be able to create interactivity and game play through scripting, using functions, finite state machines, variables, and if statements.

By the end of the course students should be able to understand video game design theory. They will utilize this theory and scripting skills to design and create a working prototype game that engages and entertains the player.

Students are expected to be familiar with standard computer operations (e.g., login, cut & paste, email attachments, compressing files, etc.) before enrolling in the course. It is recommended to have completed the ‘Introduction to Java’ or the ‘Scratch’ course. The course will be conducted in English.

    Principles of Engineering Design

What is the difference between science and engineering? What are the techniques that must be applied for successfully tackling any engineering challenge, from designing and building a bed-side table to conceptualizing and sending a shuttle to space? How can a group of engineers efficiently compartmentalize a multi-system project, allocate tasks and optimize the budget provided to solve a multifaceted constructional problem? This course explores a range of topics from physics and science and bridges the gap between pure theoretical knowledge and its practical application. Through daily doses of lectures, class discussions, problem-solving and plentiful hands-on lab activities, the students will be exposed to an array of concepts, varying from Newtonian dynamics and circuitry to fluid dynamics and thermal physics and through their application, complete engineering tasks of progressively increasing complexity.

    Learning objectives:

    • Apply concepts from various topics of physics into practical constructional projects with strict requirements, aimed at tackling specific problems of varying complexity and constraints.
    • Train in the engineering design process, practical problem-solving and collaborative teamwork to complete assigned engineering design and production tasks.
    • Develop and train a variety of technical skills, including detailed technical drawings of projects, precision soldering of electronic components and wood work skills.

    Superhero Academy

Save humanity, join the Superhero Academy!

Much like Superman and Batman, our Superhero Academy students are called upon to complete missions to help save humanity. In this interdisciplinary course, we will form a literary community and utilize disciplines such as technology, chemistry, psychology, literature, art, engineering, and sociology in the fight against crime, and in an effort to protect civilians against evil super-villains. Each mission will help us develop our vocabulary, creativity, critical thinking, and writing and presentation skills. Then, in order to graduate from CTY Greece’s Superhero Academy, we will create our own secret superhero identity, and engage in an original battle against threats of destruction. Superhuman powers, time traveling, tech novelties, architectural marvels, behaviors, motivations and code of ethics come alive, to form unique characters, extraordinary settings and epic stories!

Lessons and one-on-one conferences with the instructor will help students create their own mythological universe and help them grow as writers, inventors, storytellers and communicators. Cooperative learning and constructive criticism are key elements of the course, and detailed responses from your instructor and peers will play an essential role in the students’ growth.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Read, analyze, and discuss works of superhero fiction.
    • Practice writing personal narratives, instructional texts, descriptive articles and opinion pieces.
    • Utilize the tools introduced and skills learned in the course to compose four works of creative writing.
    • Engage in the writing workshop process, editing and revising work based on feedback from the instructor and your peers.

    The Magic of Mathematical Thinking

Welcome to the enchanting world of mathematical thinking! In this course, yοu will embark on a magical journey where numbers, shapes, and patterns come to life through the power of mathematical thinking.

Through captivating stories, interactive games, and hands-on activities, you will uncover the beauty and wonder of mathematics. You will learn to see the world through a mathematical lens, discovering the hidden patterns and structures that surround you every day.

From exploring the symmetry of nature to unraveling the mysteries of prime numbers, you will engage in a variety of activities designed to stimulate their curiosity and creativity. You will develop problem-solving skills as they tackle mathematical puzzles and challenges, learning to approach problems with imagination and ingenuity.

Join us on this magical adventure where mathematical thinking sparks curiosity, inspires creativity, and opens doors to endless possibilities!

    Learning Objectives:

    • Define and distinguish between inductive, deductive, and abductive reasoning, providing examples of each.
    • Explore and explain the relationship between number patterns and geometry, using both explicit and recursive formulas.
    • Be introduced to symbolic logic by constructing and interpreting truth tables.
    • Solve problems using algebraic, geometric, and symbolic representations and different models.
    • Cultivate skills to enhance cooperation, creativity, critical thinking, flexibility.

United Nations and Advanced Geography: Reshape the World

The defense of human rights, the response to humanitarian crises, the protection of the environment, and the provision of humanitarian aid are some of the issues that concern and are managed by the United Nations. In this course students get to know and understand through short lectures, various readings, discussions, experiential activities and research how the natural, economic, cultural and political characteristics of each country influence and shape policy-making at a global level.

In addition, they practice their speaking and writing, develop their critical thinking and broaden their knowledge of geography and international relations.

Students also learn about the role of ambassadors at the United Nations, as they take part in simulated meetings, exploring a specific country and determining its position on global issues that come before the Organization. Finally, they draft position papers and resolutions with an in-depth understanding of diplomatic negotiations.
