    Pythos: Where Code Bends the World is an immersive course that invites students to master the fundamentals of Python programming within a fantastical universe. Inspired by the beloved saga “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” this unique experience transforms abstract coding concepts into tangible superpowers.

    Students will embark on an epic quest through the four nations of Pythos, where the ability to code is akin to magic. By blending interactive storytelling with hands-on technical challenges, learners will not just study computer science—they will live it.

    The Codebending Path (Learning Objectives): To save the world of Pythos, students must master the elements of Python:

    Earth (Foundations): Build unbreakable code structures by mastering Variables and Data Types (integers, strings, lists), creating the bedrock upon which all programs stand.

    Water (Flow): Learn the art of adaptability using Control Flow (if/else statements) and Loops (for/while), allowing programs to react fluidly to changing conditions.

    Fire (Power): Harness the energy of Functions, creating reusable and powerful blocks of code to execute complex actions with precision and intensity.

    Air (Abstraction): Unlock the freedom of Libraries and Modules, utilizing existing tools to expand creative possibilities and solve algorithmic problems with elegance.

    Through this journey, students will evolve from novices to true Codebenders, developing critical Computational Thinking to debug errors and the Collaborative Spirit to solve real-world problems alongside their team.

    Superhero Academy

    Save humanity, join the Superhero Academy!

    Much like Superman and Batman, our Superhero Academy students are called upon to complete missions to help save humanity. In this interdisciplinary course, we will form a literary community and utilize disciplines such as technology, chemistry, psychology, literature, art, engineering, and sociology in the fight against crime, and in an effort to protect civilians against evil super-villains. Each mission will help us develop our vocabulary, creativity, critical thinking, and writing and presentation skills. Then, in order to graduate from CTY Greece’s Superhero Academy, we will create our own secret superhero identity, and engage in an original battle against threats of destruction. Superhuman powers, time traveling, tech novelties, architectural marvels, behaviors, motivations and code of ethics come alive, to form unique characters, extraordinary settings and epic stories! 

    Learning Objectives:

    • Read, analyze, and discuss works of superhero fiction.
    • Practice writing personal narratives, instructional texts, descriptive articles and opinion pieces.
    • Utilize the tools introduced and skills learned in the course to compose four works of creative writing.
    • Engage in the writing workshop process, editing and revising work based on feedback from the instructor and your peers.

    The Art & Science of Filmaking

    Almost 120 years ago (1896), the first film ever made was presented in a French café impressing the audience. From that time a new art was progressively formed through a variety of artistic movements, trends, and also scientific and technological achievements.

    Film watching has been a favorite habit for billions of people around the world. But, why are so many people engaged by the stories presented on screen? What are the biological and psychological processes activated during film-watching? How have these processes evolved in humans? Do we all “see” the same story on screen? Furthermore, how is cinematic reality constructed? How do images and sounds interact to compose the cinematic world? What is the science behind visual and audio effects?

    These are just some of the concepts to be investigated by the students in this course. As they develop a deep understanding of the principles of cinematic narration, students will also learn various scientific concepts as well as techniques related the film-making and film-watching processes.

    The Psychology of Social Interactions

    Ever wondered how our identity is formed and how it shapes who we are? Curious about how globalization influences the way we behave? Join us in “Psychology of Human Relationships” as we delve into these questions and explore common social phenomena such as fanaticism, conformity, bystanderism and stereotyping. But wait, there’s more! Human relationships are all about communicating with others. Learn how to build strong connections through developing skills like active listening and empathy. Oh, and it wouldn’t be a psychology course if we didn’t dive into mental health issues, such as decoding what’s “normal” and challenging the stigma surrounding mental illness. Get ready to not just learn, but to question, discover, and navigate the incredible complexity of human relationships! Are you in?

    The World of Εconomics and Enterpreneurship

    Alfred Marshall described economics as “the study of mankind in the ordinary business of life.” How much are you willing to pay for ice cream on a hot summer day? Why professional athletes earn so much? Is there such a thing as a perfectly competitive market? Why has Google been accused of monopolistic practices?  Is Bitcoin a financial bubble or our future currency? Which are the key success factors for businesses in the modern economic era? What is a “start-up” company and how can it be financed?

    The “world of economics and entrepreneurship” aims to answer these questions in a creative and exciting way; by investigating how various economic agents (households, firms and governments) make crucial decisions, students become familiar with the mechanisms that shape our current economic and business reality and therefore our society. During this course, students analyze basic economic and business concepts, such as supply and demand, scarcity of resources, cost of production, market structure, incentives, business strategy, innovation and more, and consider them in the context of today’s global economy.

    Case studies and participation in the creation of a small “start-up” through a firm simulation game will provide useful insight into businesses organization, operations and decision-making. Upon completion of the course, students will acquire useful knowledge upon the basic functions of an economy and a business, becoming themselves responsible decision-makers in their everyday lives.

    Traveling to the Stars

    This course aims to introduce students to the subject of space and the science of astronomy. Students will travel to our solar system and will learn about the moons of the planets, while at the same time they will be introduced to the myths and legends that accompany them. They will learn about comets and asteroids, they will become familiar with constellations, while practicing their geometry skills by measuring angles, calculating circumferences and areas, and drawing circles. They will learn about the life of astronauts and space missions and will write their own stories about journeys to hidden plans and meetings with mysterious travelers of our solar system.
