  • Foundations of Psychology

Can you measure happiness or anger? How do brain functions, our cognition, the environment and our personality interact to shape who we are? Can you gain all this knowledge in three weeks? Foundations of Psychology gives students the opportunity to establish connections between factors that determine our behavior and wellbeing. Students learn how to conduct research and gather data, in order to measure emotions, behaviors, and cognition. A holistic approach to human behavior is utilized, combining the understanding of how the brain, hormones and genetics influence behaviors, along with the impact of the environment.  Experimentation, hands-on activities and role-play, as well as debates and heated discussions will provide students with a thorough understanding of the foundations of the most important fields of Psychology. The course also focuses on abnormal psychology, one of the areas that most students are especially interested in. Mental health disorders, their symptoms, causes and management are introduced from a critical point of view.

    Learning Objectives

    • Demonstrate knowledge on research methods and biological psychology, such as brain anatomy, hormone regulation and genetics.
    • Experiment with memory and thinking games, to determine the role of cognition in behavior.
    • Critically assess the role of the environment on development and wellbeing.
    • Research and review mental health disorders, their causes and management.

    Fundamentals of Computer Science

Do computers make mistakes? How does a machine even know what to do? Is Artificial Intelligence really intelligent? This course will guide students through the principles of computer science, exploring the theory and real-world applications of the concepts that govern it. Students will learn about the concepts of algorithms, binary mathematics, Boolean algebra and digital logic, and the theory of computation. They will be introduced to the workings of computer architecture, operating systems, computer networks and embedded systems, and gain insight into the neural networks that power modern AI systems. Throughout the course, the students will have the opportunity to build on their newfound theoretical knowledge through simulations on topics such as Digital Design and Turing Machines, as well as a plethora of hands-on programming challenges, primarily in C++.

    Learning Objectives

    • Gain a broad understanding of how computing and technology are shaping our world.
    • Formulate and implement algorithms in one or more industry-standard programming languages; Investigate code errors, debug and test programs, and evaluate complexity of algorithms
    • Think algorithmically to solve programming problems using conditional, iterative and recursive structures, and other techniques.
    • Compare and contrast procedural and object-oriented programming paradigms
    • Develop collaboration skills in team, project-based learning environments

FutureCoders: Python Bootcamp – Build, Think, Create

FutureCoders: Python Bootcamp is a dynamic introductory programming course designed for students who want to take their first steps into the world of technology through Python.

During this interactive weekend program, students will explore the fundamental concepts of programming — including variables, conditionals, loops, and problem-solving logic — through hands-on activities and creative projects. The goal of the program is to foster analytical thinking, creativity, and confidence through the joy of building and creating.

This course is an accessible and beginner-friendly adaptation of foundational computer science principles, specially designed for students with little or no prior experience. No background knowledge is required — only curiosity and a willingness to create.

A first step into the world of programming that could be the beginning of something great!

    Genetics

Did you know that if one person’s DNA was unraveled and placed end to end, it would stretch to the sun and back at least 60 times? Or that humans and chimps share a surprising 98.8 percent of their DNA? How can we be so similar and yet so different? How does all that relate to having your mother’s eyes, or your father’s nose? Or even your great grandmother’s hair? And how did complex, multicellular organisms evolve from simpler, single-celled ones? We begin with an exploration of Mendelian genetics to determine how simple traits are passed from parents to offspring, delve into more complex concepts such as sex-linked traits and polygenic inheritance, to move towards understanding the genetics of inherited disorders. We will also take a look into the fascinating world of 6 million years of evolution. Furthermore, we learn and practice some of the methods and techniques that geneticists use to explore these concepts, such as PCR, gel electrophoresis, and bacterial transformations.

    Learning objectives

    • Predict the impact of mutations and the inheritance patterns of different diseases.
    • Utilize biotechnological laboratory skills to determine the genotypes of individuals and explore the process of transformation, a key technique in genetic engineering.
    • Research and present a genetically inherited disease/syndrome including characteristics such as genetic heterogeneity, penetrance and expressivity.

Genetics and Food: From Molecule to Medicine

Have you ever wondered how biomolecules or chemical compounds contained in food affect our genes? Why each of us perceives the taste of foods differentely or how certain nutrients influence human health on a molecular level? This course explores the fascinating correlation between food, the human genome and the potential application of food science in medicine, in an interdisciplinary manner.

Students are introduced to fundamental concepts of food biochemistry and investigate the influence of nutrition in gene expression. Through the study of basic biological and pharmacological principles, they examine the crucial role of food science and technology in combating inflammations and serious diseases. Gene regulation, nutrigenomics and the study of novel edible materials with application in medicine are some of the key concepts of the exciting world which bridges food and medicine! Students also gain hands-on experience with laboratory techniques, involving gel electrophoresis, synthesis of polymeric materials for personalized medicine, and various biochemical assays (e.g. DNA extraction).

    Learning Objectives:
    • Study of the structure of nutrients and their impact on human body function.
    • Investigate the bioactivity of nutrients and its application in treatment of various diseases.
    • Practice laboratory techniques used in biosciences and food industry.
    • Develop and communicate cutting-edge projects through poster and oral presentations.

Inside the Brain: Psychology Meets Medicine

How does the brain create thoughts, emotions, and behavior? What happens when it is injured or affected by illness?

In this interdisciplinary course, students will explore the fascinating connection between neuroscience, psychology, and medicine. Through interactive activities, real clinical case studies, and hands-on experiments, participants will learn how brain structure and biology influence memory, decision-making, personality, and mental health.

The course also introduces modern medical technologies and ethical questions shaping the future of brain science.
