  • Probability and Game Theory

    Game theory
What do a prime minister, a general, an athlete, a lawyer, a businessman, a psychologist, a spouse and a biologist have in common? Game Theory deals with the study of the behavior of rational beings (those who decide and act on the basis of their logic and “interest”), in situations where they compete or cooperate with others.  Therefore, all of us are faced daily with difficult problems that are at the core of Game Theory, which in conjunction with Mathematics, is indispensable in the understanding of social sciences, including economics, sociology, environmental studies, and psychology.

    Probability
Uncertainty is prevalent in our lives. Everyday questions, such as what’s the weather going to be this weekend and whether it’s worth playing a game of chance, or larger-scale questions like how the global climate changes, and how an epidemic develops, or even more exotic ones, such as what is the possibility of life on other planets or the risk of the earth being hit by a celestial body, cannot be answered with complete certainty. Through mathematics and probability theory we can study uncertainty and analyze these situations.

In this course, we deal with the fundamental concepts of theory and harness its power to study games between people, companies, states and other entities when faced with situations of uncertainty. Students play games, study and analyze them and are led to the most innovative scientific ideas, to make strategic decisions, thereby increasing their profit and/or reducing their damage!

    Learning Objectives

    • Review and apply the fundamentals of probability to solve mathematical problems, develop an understanding of the theoretical foundations for fundamental models in game theory and model certain types of human behavior in competitive decision-making situations.
    • Examine and find the balance (solution) in zero-sum, non-zero sum, signaling, cooperative games, simultaneous and sequential games and utilize real-life and computer simulations to test theories and justify conclusions.
    • Share ideas and solutions to problems, both written and orally through individual exercises and collaborative projects or tournaments.

Pythos: Where Code Bends the World

Pythos: Where Code Bends the World is an immersive course that invites students to master the fundamentals of Python programming within a fantastical universe. Inspired by the beloved saga “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” this unique experience transforms abstract coding concepts into tangible superpowers.

Students will embark on an epic quest through the four nations of Pythos, where the ability to code is akin to magic. By blending interactive storytelling with hands-on technical challenges, learners will not just study computer science—they will live it.

The Codebending Path (Learning Objectives): To save the world of Pythos, students must master the elements of Python:

Earth (Foundations): Build unbreakable code structures by mastering Variables and Data Types (integers, strings, lists), creating the bedrock upon which all programs stand.

Water (Flow): Learn the art of adaptability using Control Flow (if/else statements) and Loops (for/while), allowing programs to react fluidly to changing conditions.

Fire (Power): Harness the energy of Functions, creating reusable and powerful blocks of code to execute complex actions with precision and intensity.

Air (Abstraction): Unlock the freedom of Libraries and Modules, utilizing existing tools to expand creative possibilities and solve algorithmic problems with elegance.

Through this journey, students will evolve from novices to true Codebenders, developing critical Computational Thinking to debug errors and the Collaborative Spirit to solve real-world problems alongside their team.

    Superhero Academy

Save humanity, join the Superhero Academy!

Much like Superman and Batman, our Superhero Academy students are called upon to complete missions to help save humanity. In this interdisciplinary course, we will form a literary community and utilize disciplines such as technology, chemistry, psychology, literature, art, engineering, and sociology in the fight against crime, and in an effort to protect civilians against evil super-villains. Each mission will help us develop our vocabulary, creativity, critical thinking, and writing and presentation skills. Then, in order to graduate from CTY Greece’s Superhero Academy, we will create our own secret superhero identity, and engage in an original battle against threats of destruction. Superhuman powers, time traveling, tech novelties, architectural marvels, behaviors, motivations and code of ethics come alive, to form unique characters, extraordinary settings and epic stories!

Lessons and one-on-one conferences with the instructor will help students create their own mythological universe and help them grow as writers, inventors, storytellers and communicators. Cooperative learning and constructive criticism are key elements of the course, and detailed responses from your instructor and peers will play an essential role in the students’ growth.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Read, analyze, and discuss works of superhero fiction.
    • Practice writing personal narratives, instructional texts, descriptive articles and opinion pieces.
    • Utilize the tools introduced and skills learned in the course to compose four works of creative writing.
    • Engage in the writing workshop process, editing and revising work based on feedback from the instructor and your peers.

    The Magic of Mathematical Thinking

Welcome to the enchanting world of mathematical thinking! In this course, yοu will embark on a magical journey where numbers, shapes, and patterns come to life through the power of mathematical thinking.

Through captivating stories, interactive games, and hands-on activities, you will uncover the beauty and wonder of mathematics. You will learn to see the world through a mathematical lens, discovering the hidden patterns and structures that surround you every day.

From exploring the symmetry of nature to unraveling the mysteries of prime numbers, you will engage in a variety of activities designed to stimulate their curiosity and creativity. You will develop problem-solving skills as they tackle mathematical puzzles and challenges, learning to approach problems with imagination and ingenuity.

Join us on this magical adventure where mathematical thinking sparks curiosity, inspires creativity, and opens doors to endless possibilities!

    Learning Objectives:

    • Define and distinguish between inductive, deductive, and abductive reasoning, providing examples of each.
    • Explore and explain the relationship between number patterns and geometry, using both explicit and recursive formulas.
    • Be introduced to symbolic logic by constructing and interpreting truth tables.
    • Solve problems using algebraic, geometric, and symbolic representations and different models.
    • Cultivate skills to enhance cooperation, creativity, critical thinking, flexibility.

United Nations and Advanced Geography: Reshape the World

The defense of human rights, the response to humanitarian crises, the protection of the environment, and the provision of humanitarian aid are some of the issues that concern and are managed by the United Nations. In this course students get to know and understand through short lectures, various readings, discussions, experiential activities and research how the natural, economic, cultural and political characteristics of each country influence and shape policy-making at a global level.

In addition, they practice their speaking and writing, develop their critical thinking and broaden their knowledge of geography and international relations.

Students also learn about the role of ambassadors at the United Nations, as they take part in simulated meetings, exploring a specific country and determining its position on global issues that come before the Organization. Finally, they draft position papers and resolutions with an in-depth understanding of diplomatic negotiations.

    LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

    • Understand the geographic factors that influence international relations and political decisions at the global level.
    • Study the structure, operation and role of the United Nations and other international organizations in dealing with global challenges.
    • Understand the importance of international cooperation and diplomacy in solving global issues such as climate change, humanitarian aid and peace and security.
    • Development of critical thinking, research and communication skills necessary to analyze and discuss complex global issues.
    • Strengthen cooperation, negotiation and diplomacy skills through simulations or role-plays concerning the activities of the United Nations.
